OYAK MATHS CONTEST AMONG HIGH SCHOOLS

In a society that had not gone through processes like renaissance and reform that shook and carried the related nations forward, the companies, as a part of the society, we know had and have to create projects that would move the societies forward. We regard the efforts of companies that have been the symbol of success in the society, to step forward only with the economic achievement as a factor that hinders the permanency and assiduity of their success. Therefore, we evaluate scientific, social and cultural contribution of the companies to the society they belong, along with their economic contribution as an inevitable element for an overall development and success. With the conscious that sparks of thoughts form the base for developments, we have constituted the project, "Maths Contest Among High Schools" to bring mathematics, the greatest creativity of humanity, into the agenda of the people. We have taken in hand the high school youth, the generation that is most open to developments, to plant the seeds of analytical thought to the people of the cities where our factories are.     
                                                                                                                       
We decided to carry mathematics that almost exists in every element of life, which sets the base for analytical thought and a nightmare for the students as a frightening lesson in school, to the agenda of the people under the motto, "Life is Mathematics" which in fact is the foundation block of creativity and productivity.    

At the point where we designated the field of the project as mathematics and its platform as contest, with the thought of the need for a strong and respectable partner to give the strongest message to the people, we decided to cooperate with TÜBITAK, a well-known and reliable institute of Turkey in scientific research.  With detailed presentations that evoke their inspiration "OYAK Maths Contest Among High Schools" with the motto, "Life is Mathematics" was brought to life. 

The project that initiated with 428 students from 107 schools of 6 cities where the OYAK Cement factories were spread in 7 years to 17 cities, covering the cities where the OYAK Companies are, reached to 1968 students from 493 schools. At the end of seven years, we met 7860 students from 1972 schools.

As OYAK Cement Group, we had proclaimed the year 2003 as the year of Productivity and Mathematics, had developed investment and rationalisation projects to increase the productivity in the group Companies and raised the profitability levels of the companies at a discernible manner.  

As we have always kept the conscious of social responsibility at a high level, we decided to organise mathematic contests in the cities where our factories were.

In the contests organised in Adana, Bolu, Ordu (Ünye), Mardin and Elazığ in 2003, where our factories were, our main purpose was to develop the conscious for mathematics at least in the regions of our factories, let people feel that mathematics is the first step into everything and to contribute even at a very little scale to the cultural level of these cities. To achieve our goal we cooperated with TÜBITAK, the greatest scientific research institute of Turkey.
